The forum has been organized by the Government of Turkmenistan jointly with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The conference is being attended by the official delegations from 32 countries and 16 international organizations, as well as heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Ashgabat, the Turkmen government members, heads of relevant ministries and departments, public associations, representatives of foreign and Turkmen mass media.

The aim of the conference is to identify the constructive approaches to solving the urgent problems of migration.

The speakers at the forum expressed confidence that this conference will serve as a powerful impetus for the successful resolution of problems in this area, contributing to ensuring peace, security and prosperity in the Central Asian region and worldwide.

The IOM Director General, William Lacy Swing, and the UN Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, Volker Turk, expressed sincere gratitude to Turkmenistan for hosting this conference. They stressed that the fruitful cooperation in this area is intended to support countries in developing specific actions to protect the rights of refugees.

Four major topics were discussed in the plenary sessions - migration and development; migration and health; migration and emergencies; migration and human trafficking.

As part of the International Conference, a ceremony was held at the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan to present passports to persons who were granted Turkmen citizenship in accordance with the decree of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

According to the ceremony participants, this action serves as a shining example of Turkmenistan’s commitment to the principles of humanism, its international obligations in the field of humanitarian law, namely the standards for protection of human rights and freedoms.
